Problematic

I spend a great deal of time on the internet and as I am on it quite often what I’ve discovered is that the internet seems to be obsessed with is discovering every single dirty secret a person might have, exposing them, and holding it over their heads. Someone is uninformed and accidentally says something offensive, the internet automatically jumps on them acting as though they committed some unforgivable crime. I think we are sometimes really tough on people, we jump on every fault we see. Why do people do this, does it make us feel better about ourselves? As I am an extremely defensive person who sometimes does not respond well to criticism, I thought it would be prudent to be open and honest early on; So, before this gets too far, I want to confess…I’m problematic. I’m not vegan, which some people would claim is problematic in and of itself, and I’m not really vegetarian either and while some people may claim that that is horrible and promotes animal cruelty, I’ve never conside...

Passion and Power

I think most people have things that they are passionate about, whether it is sports, music, literature, or even your favorite television show, there is something that most of us like to put our whole being into and we enjoy talking about it. There is nothing that can make us feel more satisfied or frustrated than the things we are passionate about. One of the things that I am passionate about is politics. When I was younger, people used to tell me that I should be a politician when I grew up; of course, this was before I developed anxiety. However, while I realize that any aspiration of being a United States senator or representative is little more than a pipe dream and not one I think I would even truly want, I think as a citizen being passionate about politics and social issues is important. I’m going to be honest, this past presidential election did not go the way I wanted it to, not even in the slightest. However, something that gave me hope was seeing so many people around ...

Diversity of Experience

When I was younger, one of my high school teachers had a small, framed motivational poster that read “Experience is the best teacher, but the tuition is costly,” for some reason or another that always struck me. At first looking at it made me annoyed, I thought it just another one of those quotes claiming that younger people know absolutely nothing and older, more experienced individuals knew everything. As a teenager, nothing was more irritating than individual looking down on you and minimizing your abilities due to your age; however, as time went on I realized that it didn’t necessarily mean that. My older sister died in a car accident in October of my senior year of high school. She had been my life line and I felt completely lost without her; to be honest, sometimes I still feel lost without her. We had both struggled with mental health issues in high school we understood each other in a way that most of the people around us were unable to. We lived in the same house, experi...

Pride

This past month was National Pride month; for those who do not know what this means, it is basically a month set aside to bring awareness about LQBTQ+ issues, as well as to honor individuals who have contributed to the LGBT+ community by advocating and speaking up about LGBT+ issues. From what I understand it is about being proud of who you are and embracing who you are as a person. There have been conversations, and when I say conversations I am putting it in polite terms, about how if there is an existence of pride month for LGBTQ+ individuals than there should also be a month for heterosexual people. This argument is nothing new, it basically follows the lines of arguments such as “all lives matter vs. black lives matter”, “Meninist vs. Feminist”, etc. However, people who make these arguments are completely missing the point. Pride, does not equivalate discrimination or even dismissal of heterosexuality, just as the black lives movement does not dismiss the idea that all lives hav...

So, I’ve had the wonderful experience of getting my computer repaired the past two weeks… this is the second time in the span of 3 months and I’ve had this computer for less than a year, needless to say, I am not pleased. As it is, right now I’ve been looking for a job, which has been a bit of a pain, but I’m not going to complain too much. I just want to find something that will make me more competitive when applying for grad school. Right now, I kind of feel as though I’m in a state of limbo, I’ve graduated and I thought I’d be happier about it, but instead, I just feel like I’ve stepped off the edge of a cliff into a void of some unknown depth. I realize that this sounds pretty cliché, but I guess the whole idea of graduating and being thrust into life just reminded me that I really have no idea what I’m doing with my life or where I am going. I graduated with a good GPA, but it still all feels rather pointless. I suppose it may just be the good old existential crisis, anxiety, an...

Mental Health Awareness: Coping Strategies

Hello everyone, continuing with my mental health awareness theme I would like to talk about coping strategies (strategies, not mechanisms! Do not even get me started on Freud) for anxiety and depression, or stress in general. Please note that I use the term coping strategies, these techniques will not cure anxiety or depression; however, they are useful for managing the symptoms of these disorders. These are not a replacement for therapy. Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, I'm going to share some of the coping techniques I have used and one’s that have been shared with me by various people over the years.                 As I mentioned in my last post, I have anxiety and experience panic attacks. Thankfully, I am usually at least somewhat aware when a panic atta...

Mental Health Awareness: My Story

Hello everyone, continuing with the theme of mental health for the month, I figured I would share a bit of my own story about mental illness. This is something I've avoided talking about publicly due to the stigma attached to mental illness; however, I think that openness and discussion about mental illness is one of the most effective ways to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness, and if I'm going to ask others to be honest about their struggles then I should be open and honest about mine. I have social anxiety, it isn't extremely severe, I am currently able to go outside and go to many social functions without too much stress and it has become more manageable over time; however, there are many situations that cause me a great deal of stress. I was homeschooled when I was younger, which before anyone comments on that being homeschooled did not cause my anxiety. I was fairly social as a child and I wouldn't say that I worried all that much, my...
