Mental Health Awareness: Coping Strategies

Hello everyone, continuing with my mental health awareness theme I would like to talk about coping strategies (strategies, not mechanisms! Do not even get me started on Freud) for anxiety and depression, or stress in general. Please note that I use the term coping strategies, these techniques will not cure anxiety or depression; however, they are useful for managing the symptoms of these disorders. These are not a replacement for therapy. Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, I'm going to share some of the coping techniques I have used and one’s that have been shared with me by various people over the years.                 As I mentioned in my last post, I have anxiety and experience panic attacks. Thankfully, I am usually at least somewhat aware when a panic attack is coming on. Usually, my hands will start shaking, I will feel dizzy, and I will experience a squeezing pain in my chest. Mental Health Awareness: My Story

Hello everyone, continuing with the theme of mental health for the month, I figured I would share a bit of my own story about mental illness. This is something I've avoided talking about publicly due to the stigma attached to mental illness; however, I think that openness and discussion about mental illness is one of the most effective ways to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness, and if I'm going to ask others to be honest about their struggles then I should be open and honest about mine. I have social anxiety, it isn't extremely severe, I am currently able to go outside and go to many social functions without too much stress and it has become more manageable over time; however, there are many situations that cause me a great deal of stress. I was homeschooled when I was younger, which before anyone comments on that being homeschooled did not cause my anxiety. I was fairly social as a child and I wouldn't say that I worried all that much, my sister and I used

Mental Health Awareness: Stigma in Media

May is mental health awareness month and as I studied psychology for my undergraduate degree at university I felt it important to talk about mental health this month.  I am going to be citing some articles because I think it is important to give credit where credit is due. Also, I was taught in college that if you don’t cite your sources you will die…Just kidding, it’s worse, you will be expelled! (Okay, that might be a slight exaggeration). Honestly, seriously, though, citing sources is important, not to mention polite.               There is a great deal of stigma that has been attached to the idea of mental illness, so much so that many people are hesitant to admit when they are experiencing mental health issues. While I love crime dramas, I must admit that they are some of the most damaging when it comes to perceptions about mental illness. While in the past decade more crime dramas have begun to give lip service to the idea that mental illness does not make one

Here, I would like to discuss important issues such as mental health, politics, important recent events in the world, etc.  I have just recently earned my bachelor's degree and I will also share some tips on studying and random anecdotes about my life that I feel may be relatable, helpful, or simply humorous. It has always been a dream of mine to share these things with people and since I basically live my life on the internet I decided to find a community to share with here. I would love to start a dialog with people so if you have any suggestions on topics you would like me to discuss, please feel free to leave a comment. Also, if you would like to share your opinions on the topic I am discussing also feel free to comment. I may discuss controversial topics and I understand that people have very strong opinions and that is okay; however,  I would really love for this to be a safe space where people can share i
